Chita Rivera
“Ms. Rivera was a whirling, bounding, high-kicking elemental force of the dance; aseductive singer of smoky ballads and sizzling jazz; and a propulsive actress of vaudevillianenergy,” the New York Times states in an article honoring her long life and unexpected death. Astatement from Newsweek called her, “only the greatest musical-theater dancer ever.” ChitaRivera was renowned as one of the most enthusiastic, passionate, talented dancers and actorsof all time. Beloved by dancers, and people alike, everyone knew her name. From Broadway, toeducating and making sure her story got passed down, she accomplished many things before itwas her time to leave this earth. Her name and her accomplishments will never be forgotten.Chita performed many productions on Broadway, in score productions in both New Yorkand London, she also trained in ballet before joining the musical stage. From West Side Story in1957 and Kiss of the Spider Woman in 1993, nothing, not even old age, could stop her fromgetting up on that stage and touching the hearts of each and every person in that room.Although at the age of 87 and the Coronavirus shut down, she stepped down and put attentiononto educating others on her life and dance. It was just last year Rivera appeared at the danceteacher convection and was greeted by adoring teachers and fans alike, commending her forher impact on the dance and musical communities. My very own dance teacher thought of her as an idol to always be remembered. A fewdays after Chita’s passing, she told us of her influence in the dance community and herpresentation at the National Dance Foundation Convention. I was so astounded by heraccomplishments. I, as a dancer, was in awe of what she managed to achieve at such an oldage. The high kicks and vigorous turns Rivera performed defied her aging body. She worked
well past the age of retirement because of her love and passion for dance and theater. Dancersworldwide should be inspired not just by her success, but her perseverance. Dance is nevergoing to be easy, no one said it would, but if you put your heart and soul into it, you will fall inlove.Various newspapers and magazines have written down her story. You don’t need to lookfar to hear of the resilient and influential Chita Rivera. She has impacted the hearts and mindsof many and, from her final resting place, she may continue to inspire and guide both young andold. Dancers or not, we can all learn from her story.raph.
